The Quito Basilica of the National Vow

More exactly known as the Basilica of National Vow. It was made possible by the citizens of Quito who paid special taxes for the construction and land purchase. It is associated with the onjy priest congregation native to Ecuador, Priests to the Heart of Jesus and Mary Divine Love. It was started in 1887, under the authority of Pope Leo XIII, and after completion, blessed by Pope John Paul II, shown here, in 1985 and officially opened in 1988.

It is said that the builders were inspired by the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris.

You'd be hard pressed to find better stained glass windows anywhere in the world

Climbing to the roof, one finds some interesting and unusual stone carvings

From the top floor of the hostal I attempted a few night shots
